How Can Such a Cutie be So Sad?

by Merry on September 26, 2012

Last night we went and picked up Evan’s new glasses. I always assumed glasses were a foregone conclusion because I’m blind as a bat & Dewey has glasses too. Evan never seemed to think glasses were a big deal. Well, right up until he need them that is.

Last night he tried to come up with a reason we shouldn’t go get them. Then this morning he had a full on melt down when he needed to leave for school. (This is where my heart started to break.) As he was sobbing, he said “Mama, all the kids are going to make fun of me. No one else in my class has glasses!” I promised that they wouldn’t make fun but to no avail.

I finally convinced him to get in the car so I could drive him to school as his earlier meltdown had burned up crucial walking time. I thought we were out of the woods but as soon as I pulled up to the school……TEARS. My friend, Jenny, from up the street even tried to talk to him about his glasses but….he wasn’t listening. As we lined up to go into the school, he got louder. By the time I talked to his teacher, he was really LOUD. Yeah….screaming, crying, clinging to me LOUD. Sigh. Thankfully his teacher is awesome and she said “Don’t worry about it…go. He’ll be fine.”

So I did. He had a rough rest of the day and didn’t wear his glasses. He did wear them when he got home. One of his friends (Jenny’s son) told him he thought his glasses were cool (Yay!) so that really helped. He says he will wear them tomorrow. Here’s hoping!

Thankfully by the time I came home tonight he was all smiles…..

My little glasses boy. I think they are adorable!

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Have you ever had to talk your kids down from something they’re really scared of at school?

Aww, poor guy. He totally suits those glasses…they look so good. I’m sure it will get better. My 8 year old has been wearing them since preschool and has never had a minutes trouble until tonight, coincidentally. He told my husband at bedtime that only nerds wear glasses. Yeeshk. Good luck!

LOL…maybe it’s something in the air! I think Evan’s glasses are cute, too. He seems better with them today.

Crossing my fingers for your little one tomorrow. All 4 of my kids think glasses are cool and are trying to come up with reasons why they should have some!

I think we always want what we don’t have. Glasses are awesome right up until you need them. I keep hoping Evan realizes how much better he sees with them.

It was. He wore his glasses. He said that some kids said they were cool while others made fun. Regardless, he seems ok with wearing them now.

Both my husband and I had glasses when we were kids so I’m waiting for this to come up for our kids too. I remember being called “four eyes” a couple of times, but it settled down quickly. Luckily, Evan is in kindergarten and the kids seem the sweetest and nicest in that grade. I’m glad his friend told them they were cool. I like that ordering glasses online is so cheap that it’s possible to have a few pairs to switch things up. It’s just like picking out a shirt for the day.

Evan’s weren’t super cheap. I may move that way if these get broken too often. I went the route of better lenses instead of cheap. We’ll see if I end up regretting that decision.
