Help End Poverty With Kiva

by Merry on August 7, 2012

I believe giving back to my community is essential. Where do you draw the line on your “community” though? Well, I think giving back globally is also a worthwhile endeavor. Kiva helps me do that and offers a way to give a “hand up, not a hand out”.

Kiva is a micro-loan organization. Your money is loaned, not given. The people who receive your loans pay them back and you get your money back. Then, you can loan the same money again. It’s a way to make a small donation give over and over again. I have been a member of Kiva since 2007 and I have made 14 loans.

Think Kiva sounds cool & want to check it out? Well, they are giving out a “free” $25 loan to anyone who wants to try Kiva for the first time. All you have to do is click here to sign up! If you sign up, I will also get a free loan so it helps twice as much.

I first heard about Kiva on NPR when one of my favorite journalists, Nicolas Kristof of the New York Times, was promoting ways for us to help fight poverty in the developing world.
