Home Design Ideas for the Design Challenged

by Merry on May 13, 2012

Yesterday I got the opportunity to attend a social media event at Williamstown, a new housing development in Airdrie ( a community just north of Calgary). When I got my invite, I was excited to see some of my mom blogger friends but I wasn’t sure what else I would get out of it. Then I remembered….we just bought a new house! I love nothing more than a beautifully decorated house but I seem to have missed that “design” bit needed to make it happen. I had totally forgotten how well show homes are always decorated.  Seeing fully decorated rooms totally shows me ideas that I would never figure out if I saw all the pieces separately.

LOVE this wallpaper. Never would have thought to do this! #williamstownab

Great wallpaper!

I never thought I would like a wallpaper this busy so much. I KNOW that had I seen it on a roll in the wallpaper store, I would have made a snide remark about how ugly it was. However, after seeing it actually on a wall….I love it!  Definitely only on one feature wall though.

Love these candlesticks! Rumor has it I can buy them from Ikea! #williamstownab

I really like these silver candlesticks. Again, I don’t know that I would have bought them before I saw how great the looked. My friend, Melissa, tells me that I can find these at Ikea. Score! Pretty & cheap!

Chandelier in the bathroom? Yes please! #williamstownab #designideas

Chandelier in the bathroom? Yes please! I don’t know that this will make it into our new house but I love how it looks. So pretty!

Aren’t these chairs pretty? I really like blue and brown. We will be ditching our cat scratched leather couch and I would love to move to some pretty cloth covered couches & maybe a couple of chairs like this. I thought I liked leather furniture but now I’ve decided that it’s really NOT me.

Now my phone is full of pictures and my mind is full of ideas. Thankfully we have lots of nice furniture to make the move (though we DO need to replace some of it) so mostly I need accessories to “finish” the rooms and give them that design “pop”. I can’t wait to get started!

Where do you get your design ideas?

I do the same things at open homes. I love going into them. Always such great ideas. I hate wallpaper in general but I do like that wall

You can’t imagine the idea’s I bring home from looking at people’s houses all day, showing them to my clients. Good thing I am too busy to do anything with the idea’s, it took me 4 years to finish decorating my house haha

I felt the same way about the wall paper! I’m so inspired to do a feature wall at our new place! Thank you so much for hanging out with us in Williamstown :)

Wallpaper is huge! It is the easiest way to pull a room together! Rule of thumb… Busy paper for a room with clean lined furniture/ neutrals, Simple paper for a room with ornate furniture/ textiles with lots of patterns.
Good luck with the move and I hope you will take a daring decorating decision! I’m sure you won’t regret it :)

I get my ideas from furniture store catalogs and the mls website. I look for the uber-expensive homes (I figure they must have hired a decorator) and feast my eyes on their posh decor. Works for some ideas.

I love visiting show homes and getting ideas that may one day make it into my own home… I am nervous about wallpaper, but when I see it done so well it makes me want to take the plunge!

It amazes me that wall paper is back in style. I love those chairs too. Thanks for this post as I had chairs like that in my office and now they are wrapped up in storage doing nothing. I think they have a new home!

Going through show homes is something my husband I love to do…sans kids, of course! So many good decorating ideas. However, like Susan, I never seem to find the time to decorate my house. I always come home and look at my blah decorating style. I like that wallpaper too. When we do our master bedroom reno wallpaper will definately be in the decorating plans!
