Luden’s Cough Drops
Certs…
Wait…I thought this was supposed to be about Sunday mornings. For me, it is. You see, growing up every Sunday was spent in church. For years it was Philadelphia United Methodist church. Sitting on the pew between my Granny and Grandaddy. Granny smelling like Halls because she always had a cough and Grandaddy in his gray suit. The pockets of which always held Certs and Luden’s cough drops that really tasted like cherry candy. What I loved most was the singing. Grandaddy sang so well with his strong voice. The preaching I could take or leave…hey…I was a kid! Then after we would either go to Granny and Grandaddy’s to eat fried chicken or we’d go to Travel Inn for the buffet. We always had to hurry if we were going to the Travel Inn because if the other churches let out before we did, it might be too busy.
I miss Sunday’s like that. My husband isn’t very religious so we don’t go to church any more. Even if we did, we live in the big city now so it’s just….different. You see, at home, I’m related to almost everyone at our church. Here, I’m related to no one. I should give it a chance sometime though. I might be surprised.

We have not attended church in ages .. firstly my husband is an atheist so wouldn’t be heading in one anytime soon. But for me, its been a difficult time teaching my kids to be accepting of all people, no matter what and then finding a church home on the same page …

Weekends were usually for family, time with the grandparents and such. We were a racing family as well. My Dad was involved with motorcycles and cars in varying degrees and later when my brother was older he raced bikes, still does actually. So Sundays were devoted to one or the other.
Now Sundays are kind of lazy days. We go to church, the same church Mike’s Dad has been going to since he was a kid. The future of this church is questionable and I have a hard time imaging finding somewhere else to attend. Afternoons are usually for reading, movies, laundry and such. Mike and Abby usually go skating in the winter.

I wrote about church too, this morning via #SOCSunday. I miss it, church, I discovered. I have attended churches as an adult but am now feeling sort of not fitting with much of the theology that surrounds me. Makes me sad!
Anyway ~ grateful to have read your words. Helps me feel better that I am not alone.

As a child Sundays were about getting out of the house or spending time at my grandparents. We didn’t go to church, it wasn’t really my mother’s thing. So, just being outdoors or with family so I could get pancakes was how it was done. Now, it’s about relaxing and trying to not have too many chores on this one day a week… oh yeah, and still a focus on a yummy breakie.
Just like you, we spend it on church together with the whole family. When I say whole family, it includes aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Yes! To me, it seemed like a reunion every Sunday then we’d have lunch in our house, me and my cousins would play while the adults look over us. I really miss those days because now, it is just me and my own family who goes to the church. Thanks!

I don’t miss church one tiny bit but a few things struck me with this post. It usually wasn’t Certs for me. It was Velamints and my dad always had them and would pass them out when we started getting too fidgety.
As for Luden’s cough drops? I’m convinced that they were nothing more than cherry candy. Although I bought my 5 year old his very own cough drops this week and I bought… you guessed it… Luden’s Cherry Cough Drops.

So funny that we have memories of similar things. Gotta love the Certs/Velamints/Ludens. Gotta keep the kids quiet during church somehow…bring on the sugar!
